In the link you provided, no one is demanding jail and "hard labor" for insurance cheaters.

However, it might lead to jail for the cheaters in the following scenario.

Individual decides not to purchase health insurance. In Mass., if you don't prove you have insurance, you are fined, and the amount of the fine can be held back from your income tax refund from the state.

The same could be done on a national level. Don't buy insurance? OK, the penalty for not doing so is withheld from your tax refund. Oh wait, you usually owe taxes on April 15? OK, with the penalty, you will owe even more. Don't feel like paying it? OK, the government can garnish your wages. Worst case scenario, after years of tax evasion, and penalty & interest buildup: you may be arrested. (Don't know where you get "hard labor" from--who does hard labor in any jail in this country?)

One thing I dislike about New Hampshire is that motorists don't have to buy auto insurance. In most states, at least a minimum amount of liability insurance is required--you can destroy your own car and body if you want, but you'd better have insurance in case you hurt someone else. In other states, you can be arrested (but no HARD LABOR) if you drive without liability insurance. In New Hampshire, its motorists are the source of financial devastation for the people they hurt.

True story: a friend of mine's father was a pedestrian crossing a road in NH while the light was red for traffic. A driver ran the red light because he was talking on his cell phone. My friend's dad was hit, and nearly killed. Had a huge amount of medical bills, and of course, our modern health insurance companies stuck him with tens of thousands in out-of-pocket expenses. Because the driver did not have any auto insurance, the pedestrian got nothing from the driver. A civil court judgement was against the driver for these costs, but the driver was low income enough to wiggle out of paying.

I don't think those who don't feel like buying health insurance should be allowed to wiggle out of their obligation to pay huge hospital bills when they get sick of have an accident. Many of these so-called freedom lovers are really just parasites waiting for another chance to cheat the system. Like the 21-year-old want doesn't want to be "forced" to buy health insurance.

I would change the bill as follows: let them refuse to buy insurance. If these individuals get ill or injured, and can't pay the bills, the courts will garnish a portion of your wages and sell your assets until every penny is paid back. (No welfare for you just because you got hurt, loser.)

Here's an advantage to my proposal: When the 21-year-old "I don't need insurance" guy crashes his motorcycle, and ends up with $65,000 in medical bills to put his body back together, he will find himself paying back the hospital for the next five or ten years. If he comes down with a cancer, and ends up owing $180,000 in medical bills, he might be paying the bills for the next 20 years. If he hates this infringement on his lifestyle, he can just move to another country. THIS COULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GET RID OF THE PARASITES IN OUR COUNTRY.

During an exclusive interview with ABC News� Jake Tapper today, President Obama said that penalties are appropriate for people who try to �free ride� the health care system but stopped short of endorsing the threat of jail time for those who refuse to pay a fine for not having insurance.

�What I think is appropriate is that in the same way that everybody has to get auto insurance and if you don't, you're subject to some penalty, that in this situation, if you have the ability to buy insurance, it's affordable and you choose not to do so, forcing you and me and everybody else to subsidize you, you know, there's a thousand dollar hidden tax that families all across America are -- are burdened by because of the fact that people don't have health insurance, you know, there's nothing wrong with a penalty.�

Under the House bill those who can afford to buy insurance and don�t� pay a fine. If the refuse to pay that fine there�s a threat � as with a lot of tax fines � of jail time. The Senate removed that provision in the Senate Finance Committee.

Mr. Obama said penalties have to be high enough for people to not game the system, but it�s also important to not be �so punitive� that people who are having a hard time find themselves suddenly worse off, thus why hardship exemptions have been built in the legislation.

�I think the general broad principle is simply that people who are paying for their health insurance aren't subsidizing folks who simply choose not to until they get sick and then suddenly they expect free health insurance. That's -- that's basic concept of responsibility that I think most Americans abide by,� Mr. Obama said, �penalties are appropriate for people who try to free ride the system and force others to pay for their health insurance.�

The President said that he didn�t think the question over the appropriateness of possible jail time is the �biggest question� the House and Senate are facing right now.

I know someone about your age who didn't feel like buying insurance. He was 24. He got appendicitus. He used a state program that would pay for the surgery based on "need" because he didn't have the money in the bank. This is unfair. He should have been put on a repayment program, even if he had to pay $25/week for the next 10 years or whatever it takes to cover the cost.

Another young man I know had a tree fall on him in the woods when he was 30 years old. Broke his back. No insurance. He ended up owing the hospital about $36,000. When healed, he worked hard at two jobs to pay them back because "they saved my life."

To the 21-year-old guy who doesn't want to be forced to buy insurance--if you do get in a major accident, or become extremely ill, what do you think should happen if you don't have insurance?

1. The hospital should not treat you because you don't have the $50,000+ required for treatment.
2. The hospital should treat you, and their legal department can ask the courts to garnish part of your wages for many years until all costs are repaid. You will not be allowed to sneak out of this obligation.
3. The state should have mercy, and eat the costs. This is the current system, which the guy above with apppendicitus took advantage of.

Also, please show me the lines in the reform bill where it says you will go to jail if you don't buy insurance. That sounds like one of the myths being spread around to scare people.

Cons who live by bizarre religious superstition should put put in charge of everything.

They can root out the non-believers with a new form of McCarthyism, encouraging people to turn in their neighbors, or be blacklisted if they don't cooperate.

They can execute the non-believers, which is better for the environment than cap & trade. Erases more than half the population, and the result will be more resources for the true believers.

The country was founded on Christian values, and was therefore destined to become a perfect Chritian theocracy, with freedom for all true believers. Real Americans love God and country. The rest of them need to be euthanized if they don't convert.

I will call it what it really is: Murder by Obama and Democrats. Plain and simple. I saw an interview with a General Casey. He basically says the Army was aware of this guy, but did not act on it - because of the need to be politically correct.

I place the deaths from this guy Hassan squarely on Obama and the Democrats for creating the atmosphere, where our Army is now afraid to stop these guys.

Originally I thought Obama can't be blamed for this, but now I assert he is absolutely at fault for what happened. This is top down management - and Obama has changed the culture of our Army and our security to allow this kind of thing to happen.

The first day of the G20 summit last month saw the use of a �sound cannon� that emitted a directed high-decibel earsplitting noise with terrifying effect. This weapon is used widely by U.S. occupation forces in Iraq and Afghanistan for �crowd control.� And now, it is being deployed by U.S. police departments for use against protesters. Knowing that other law enforcement agencies were watching this new weapon being demonstrated, the Pittsburgh police chief boasted, �It served its purpose well.� With the business district locked down, up to a thousand jail cells freed up for use and protesters placed well outside the G20 security perimeter, the cops opened fire with tear gas, stun grenades and rifle-fired bean bags on assembled youth with no march permits. What followed was a violent cat-and-mouse chase of a marauding police army in pursuit of a few hundred fleeing youth.

�If you have 5,000 police officers and a quarter-million dollars in fancy equipment, you have to do something with it,� explained Witold Walczak, legal director of the Pennsylvania American Civil Liberties Union. �Might as well go after some amateur ham radio operators in a motel room.� The amateur ham radio operators in question here are Elliot Madison and Michael Wallschlaeger, New York anarchists arrested on September 24 after a police raid on their motel room in Pittsburgh. The police found the two sitting in front of computers, wearing headphones, perusing maps and listening to scanners for the purpose of tweeting anti-G20 protesters using the Internet social-networking site Twitter.

Twitter, in cooperation with cops, shut down the anarchists� account, posting a notice that it �has been suspended due to strange activity.� This �strange activity,� according to the Pennsylvania criminal complaint, consisted of the two �directing others, specifically protesters of the G-20 summit, in order to avoid apprehension after a lawful order to disperse.� A typical tweet would have been: �Report received that police are �nabbing� anyone that looks like a protester/Black Bloc. Stay alert watch your friends!� There can be no doubt that many demonstrators on this first day of G20 protests were saved from police injury and arrest by Madison and Wallschlaeger�s warnings. For this, the Pennsylvania prosecutors are now charging Madison and Wallschlaeger with �hindering prosecution, criminal use of communication facility and possessing criminal instruments.�

On October 1 Madison�s Queens, New York, home�an anarchist collective house known as Tortuga�was raided in search of �evidence� of violation of �federal rioting laws.� FBI and New York City police searched the home for 16 hours, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., handcuffing several residents for hours. Madison, a social worker, had his confidential client list seized by federal agents. Other seized �evidence� included Curious George plush toys, Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs, artwork, correspondence with political prisoners, birth certificates, passports, videos, tax records, photographs, banners, posters, flags and a needlepoint of Lenin!

Although no federal charges have been filed yet, Madison and his wife, Elena, are now under investigation on trumped-up charges of violating an interstate rioting law. Passed in 1968, that law is known as the �H. Rap Brown law� because it was intended to target black militants and leftist activists. As the Madisons� attorney pointed out, this law has been rarely used since the case of the Chicago Seven, who were arrested during the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests in Chicago.

Under the Obama administration, the �war on terror��exemplified abroad by the continuing slaughter in Iraq and Afghanistan and the U.S. air strikes in Pakistan�continues to have a domestic reflection of furious repression of all kinds of dissent, including on an expanded electronic battlefield. While the U.S. government applauds the use of Twitter, Facebook and other social-networking sites by protesters in countries like Iran, such protesters in the U.S. are met with criminal charges.

In the case of the Madisons and Wallschlaeger, they are being gone after for distributing publicly available information. Their case is reminiscent of that of Sherman Austin, a black L.A. anarchist who was convicted in 2003 under a 1997 �anti-terrorism� law for hosting an anarchist Web site on which publicly available information was posted (see �Free Sherman Austin Now!� WV No. 809, 12 September 2003).

It is in the interest of the working class and all opponents of government repression to fight back against the capitalists� assault on democratic rights, such as the encroachment on Internet use. Drop all charges against Elliot Madison and Michael Wallschlaeger now!

Confessions of an ObamaCare Backer (liberal explains the political calculus)

The typical argument for ObamaCare is that it will offer better medical care for everyone and cost less to do it, but occasionally a supporter lets the mask slip and reveals the real political motivation. So let's give credit to John Cassidy, part of the left-wing stable at the New Yorker, who wrote last week on its Web site that "it's important to be clear about what the reform amounts to."

Mr. Cassidy is more honest than the politicians whose dishonesty he supports. "The U.S. government is making a costly and open-ended commitment," he writes. "Let's not pretend that it isn't a big deal, or that it will be self-financing, or that it will work out exactly as planned. It won't. What is really unfolding, I suspect, is the scenario that many conservatives feared. The Obama Administration . . . is creating a new entitlement program, which, once established, will be virtually impossible to rescind."

Why are they doing it? Because, according to Mr. Cassidy, ObamaCare serves the twin goals of "making the United States a more equitable country" and furthering the Democrats' "political calculus." In other words, the purpose is to further redistribute income by putting health care further under government control, and in the process making the middle class more dependent on government. As the party of government, Democrats will benefit over the long run.

This explains why Nancy Pelosi is willing to risk the seats of so many Blue Dog Democrats by forcing such an unpopular bill through Congress on a narrow, partisan vote: You have to break a few eggs to make a permanent welfare state. As Mr. Cassidy concludes, "Putting on my amateur historian's cap, I might even claim that some subterfuge is historically necessary to get great reforms enacted."

No wonder many Americans are upset. They know they are being lied to about ObamaCare, and they know they are going to be stuck with the bill.

One reads and hears with increasing disbelief and anger that we don't know the motive or motives of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army major who fired over 100 shots at his fellow American soldiers in order to murder and maim as many as possible. Hasan ended up allegedly murdering 13 people, but government and Army spokesmen and the mainstream media claim they just can't figure out why he did this. They are, however, certain that it was not an act of terrorism.

Sunday's New York Times "Week in Review" article about Nidal Hasan was titled "When Soldiers Snap." The gist of the article was that Maj. Hasan had snapped -- even though he had never been in combat. He snapped in advance. Just two sentences in the article were devoted to the possibility that his motives were in any way relatable to his Muslim faith

As Chris Matthews put it, "it's unclear if religion was a factor in this shooting." To Matthews, not only was it unclear if Hasan's Islamic faith was "the" factor, it was unclear if it was even "a" factor.

Likewise, on NPR, Tom Gjelten offered the novel explanation that Hasan, who has never been in combat, may have suffered from "pre-traumatic stress disorder" because he anticipated having traumatic distress. "Was he an example," Gjelten seriously asked, "of these soldiers who are literally freaked out by what they are likely to face when they are deployed?"

And on Fox News, Geraldo Rivera, said, "I don't know what motivates him ... as far as I know ... he's a sociopath; he's a criminal. He could have had a toothache and gone off because of that."

The deaths and maiming at Fort Hood are heartbreaking and angering. But ultimately far more injurious to America than the act of evil that caused those deaths and injuries is the massive self-deception American society engages in out of fear of being called bigoted, racist or "Islamaphobic."

Any American who is not prepared to lie to himself has reason to believe that Hasan's religious views were prominent, if not exclusive, factors for why he slaughtered fellow American soldiers. The motives appear as clear as any could be.

Chuck Medley, Fort Hood's director of Emergency Services, told Reuters that Hasan yelled "Allahu Akbar" -- the Arabic incantation of "Allah is the greatest" yelled by Islamic terrorists before they slaughter people -- just before the shooting,

Dr. Val Finnell told The Associated Press that he and other classmates participating in a 2007-2008 master's program with Hasan at the Uniformed Services University had complained about his comments, including that the war on terror was "a war against Islam."

Another classmate told the AP that he complained to five officers and two civilian faculty members at the university. He also wrote to Pentagon officials that fear in the military of being seen as politically incorrect prevented an "intellectually honest discussion of Islamic ideology" in the ranks.

Other classmates who participated in a 2007-2008 master's program at a military college said they, too, had complained to superiors about Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's anti-American views, which included his giving a presentation that justified suicide bombing and telling classmates that Islamic law trumped the U.S. Constitution.

And ABC News now reports that Hasan had attempted to contact al-Qaida.

It is a given that the vast majority of American Muslims are loyal Americans. But that's not the only given.

It is equally a given that a certain percentage of Muslims in and outside of the military are Islamists who want Americans dead and America Muslim.

It does the majority of Muslims no favor to deny the existence of the minority. And Muslim Americans do themselves no favor by denying it. Unfortunately, Muslims are theoretically represented by groups like CAIR whose values are correctly seen by most Americans as suspect.

Americans are worried by the fact that there are Muslim Americans whose beliefs compel them to murder non-Muslim Americans. But what is even more worrisome is that American Muslim groups (and their supporters on the left) deny this.

I keep hearing people on the right saying we will lose our freedoms if this bill passes.
I'd like to know exactly,which freedoms they're talking about?
As the system is now,a patient is limited to choose what kind of care he/she may recieve.
If the doctor diagnoses and prescribes certain treatment the insurance company has a a team of beuraucrats that will decide whether you are covered or not,regardless of the need.
Their purpose is to save money by denying healthcare that they deem is too expensive.They then pass these savings on to their executives in the form of exhorbitant salaries and bonuses,and to the shareholders in the form of dividends.
This healthcare reform bill will free the doctor and patient so they may persue the best form of treatment without all the unnecessary diagnostic tests that they are sometimes forced to undergo.
There will be no more waiting 2 or 3 or 6 months for approval or denial of treatment.
When you have an aggressive cancer...you can't waste this kind of time.
While this present bill that just passed the House leaves a lot to be desired,it does open the door to more choices.
To me...Choices = Freedom.......to choose.

Sure, Election Day 2009 will scare moderate Democrats and make passage of Obamacare more difficult. Sure, it makes it easier for resurgent Republicans to raise money and recruit candidates for 2010. But the most important effect of Tuesday's elections is historical. It demolishes the great realignment myth of 2008.

In the aftermath of last year's Obama sweep, we heard endlessly about its fundamental, revolutionary, transformational nature. How it was ushering in an FDR-like realignment for the 21st century in which new demographics -- most prominently, rising minorities and the young -- would bury the GOP far into the future. One book proclaimed "The Death of Conservatism," while the more modest merely predicted the terminal decline of the Republican Party into a regional party of the Deep South or a rump party of marginalized angry white men.

This was all ridiculous from the beginning. The '08 election was a historical anomaly. A uniquely charismatic candidate was running at a time of deep war weariness, with an intensely unpopular Republican president, against a politically incompetent opponent, amid the greatest financial collapse since the Great Depression. And still he won by only seven points.

Exactly a year later comes the empirical validation of that skepticism. Virginia -- presumed harbinger of the new realignment, having gone Democratic in '08 for the first time in 44 years -- went red again. With a vengeance. Barack Obama had carried it by six points. The Republican gubernatorial candidate won by 17 -- a 23-point swing. New Jersey went from plus-15 Democratic in 2008 to minus-four in 2009. A 19-point swing.

What happened? The vaunted Obama realignment vanished. In 2009 in Virginia, the black vote was down by 20 percent; the under-30 vote by 50 percent. And as for independents, the ultimate prize of any realignment, they bolted. In both Virginia and New Jersey they'd gone narrowly for Obama in '08. This year they went Republican by a staggering 33 points in Virginia and by an equally shocking 30 points in New Jersey.

White House apologists will say the Virginia Democrat was weak. If the difference between Bob McDonnell and Creigh Deeds was so great, how come when the same two men ran against each other statewide for attorney general four years ago the race was a virtual dead heat? Which made the '09 McDonnell-Deeds rematch the closest you get in politics to a laboratory experiment for measuring the change in external conditions. Run them against each other again when it's Obamaism in action and see what happens. What happened was a Republican landslide.

The Obama coattails of 2008 are gone. The expansion of the electorate, the excitement of the young, came in uniquely propitious Democratic circumstances and amid unparalleled enthusiasm for electing the first African American president.

November '08 was one shot, one time, never to be replicated. Nor was November '09 a realignment. It was a return to the norm -- and definitive confirmation that 2008 was one of the great flukes in American political history.

The irony of 2009 is that the anti-Democratic tide overshot the norm -- deeply blue New Jersey, for example, elected a Republican governor for the first time in 12 years -- because Democrats so thoroughly misread 2008 and the mandate they assumed it bestowed. Obama saw himself as anointed by a watershed victory to remake American life. Not letting the cup pass from his lips, he declared to Congress only five weeks after his swearing-in his "New Foundation" for America -- from remaking the one-sixth of the American economy that is health care to massive government regulation of the economic lifeblood that is energy.

Moreover, the same conventional wisdom that proclaimed the dawning of a new age last November dismissed the inevitable popular reaction to Obama's hubristic expansion of government, taxation, spending and debt -- the tea party demonstrators, the town hall protesters -- as a raging rabble of resentful reactionaries, AstroTurf-phony and Fox News-deranged.

Some rump. Just last month Gallup found that conservatives outnumber liberals by 2 to 1 (40 percent to 20 percent) and even outnumber moderates (at 36 percent). So on Tuesday, the "rump" rebelled. It's the natural reaction of a center-right country to a governing party seeking to rush through a left-wing agenda using temporary majorities created by the one-shot election of 2008. The misreading of that election -- and of the mandate it allegedly bestowed -- is the fundamental cause of the Democratic debacle of 2009.

Tort reform is the healthcare debate's frivolous sideshow

very circus needs a sideshow, which must be why every time the issue of rising medical costs gets debated, politicians start clamoring for "tort reform."

You know the argument: Disgruntled patients, goaded on by unscrupulous lawyers, file frivolous malpractice lawsuits and walk off with millions of dollars in undeserved awards granted by teary-eyed jurors. Doctors respond by practicing "defensive medicine," ordering lots of unnecessary tests to cover their behinds. Bingo! Medical costs hit the stratosphere.

Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) boiled this view down to its essentials in a recent Republican weekly radio address, calling for the elimination of "frivolous lawsuits against doctors and hospitals."

Tort reform has lots of fans. The public's on board because it's easy to hate lawyers. Doctors and hospitals love it because they hate to get sued. Insurance companies love it because the less money they pay out to plaintiffs, the more they get to keep. Republicans love it because trial lawyers give three-quarters of their political donations to Democrats. And Democrats pay it lip service because they're afraid to look like lawyer lovers.

Any issue featuring so many interest groups cantering about on hobbyhorses is an issue where the truth goes to die. So let's try to resuscitate the patient with a shot of reality.

First: "Frivolous" litigation. Lawyers define frivolous lawsuits as those that, from first to last, don't have a leg to stand on. Just because a lawsuit ends up a loser doesn't mean it's frivolous.

That's especially true of malpractice cases, which can bristle with complexity. Often the only way to know if an injury resulted from professional error is to use a lawsuit to pry loose the facts.

"It can be hard to tell until late in the litigation if there's really no claim," Michelle Mello, an expert on malpractice at Harvard�s School of Public Health, told me. An extensive study she helped conduct of malpractice case files showed that frivolous cases, as usually defined, are rare -- and those that do get brought usually don't yield a payment to the plaintiff.

The obverse is a bigger problem -- injury cases where the victim doesn't get a dime. These often involve lower-income or unemployed patients, says David M. Studdert, Mello�s research partner, now at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

The truth is that medical liability isn't a big driver of health costs overall. Studdert estimates the cost of malpractice litigation, in court and through defensive medicine, at roughly 2% to 3% of all U.S. healthcare spending -- in other words, no more than $50 billion out of a total annual bill of $1.7 trillion. (You'll hear estimates as high as $200 billion from outfits like the American Medical Assn., which is the antithesis of an objective source.)

It's fair to say that some reform is needed in our tort system. The trick is to make sure that the benefits of any changes go to the right people -- the patients. That hasn't been the result of the preferred remedy for malpractice lawsuits, which is to hit trial lawyers in the pocketbook. Cap their fees or jury awards (of which they customarily take a percentage), the theory goes, and they'll knock off the ambulance-chasing.

This model of tort reform comes, alas, from California. In 1975, a sharp run-up in doctors' premiums stampeded the Legislature into enacting draconian limits on malpractice cases. Under the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act, or MICRA, noneconomic damages -- that's "pain and suffering" -- were capped at $250,000. Lawyers' fees were also limited. Many other states followed with similar laws.

Who got helped by MICRA? Not consumers. California's healthcare costs aren't measurably lower than other states'. In fact, they're measurably higher.

Not the victims of medical error, at least not fairly: A Rand Corp. study in 2004 found that the cap fell disproportionately on "those with small economic losses but great damage to the plaintiff's quality of life."

Women were big losers, possibly because their claims often result from obstetrics and gynecology procedures that affect fertility or sexual lifestyle, conditions which aren't amenable to economic analysis. Such patients find it hard to even bring cases, for lawyers know the long odds of winning a judgment big enough to cover costs.

Doctors and hospitals? Premiums in California continued to rise sharply for 10 years after MICRA. Rates finally plateaued in the late '80s, but the reason may have been 1988�s Proposition 103, which rolled back casualty insurance rates.

By the way, the MICRA cap isn't indexed to inflation. So even if $250,000 was the right limit in 1975, it's the equivalent of only about $62,000 now.

MICRA's big winners are insurers. The average loss ratio for California malpractice carriers last year -- the portion of their premiums they paid out or reserved for claims -- was 16.43%, according to the state Department of Insurance. In other words, they paid out less than 17 cents of every dollar they took in.

How great a business is malpractice insurance nationwide? At American Physicians Capital (an insurer active in the Midwest), claims were falling so fast in 2007 that its chief executive publicly compared his underemployed claims managers to "the Maytag repairman." The next time you find yourself nodding in assent while some politician carries on about tort reform, remember that its benefits will go to characters like this.

That doesn't mean that no changes are needed, only that there are many ways to counter defensive medicine and the costs and inequities of the U.S. litigation system without shutting the courtroom door to malpractice cases.

Creating special courts or appointing judges to specialize in malpractice cases would help deserving victims get compensated without the grotesque overhead of full-scale trials. So would a "no-fault" system to compensate those with medical injuries regardless of their source, paired with an objective process for disciplining error-prone doctors or hospitals.

Some of these options are being tried around the country, and are promising. But none of them has the pizazz of railing about lawyers and "frivolous" lawsuits.

Reformists use studies of the current system to determine how best to reform it.
Reform opponents use scare tactics to try and stop reform. Counting words in a bill, with no attention to the context in which they're used, is a nonsense argument.

The health care industry is a vast, complex system. The latest bill, which was approved by the House last weekend, is long and detailed to cover all the aspects of reforming this complex system. Why start with a short bill full of loopholes that corporate lawyers can exploit?
Reform opponents think it's too long, and act like the length is a problem in and of itself.

Reformists are tired of letting the health care industry pay off our representatives to prevent regulatory change.
Reform opponents claim we hate freedom.
But there is no freedom when private companies own your government.

The only complaint about the bill that holds some merit is tort reform. Tort reform alone won't fix everything that is wrong. But a well thought out national tort reform bill would cut costs by roughly $20billion, according to studies. Not much of a dent in the $600-$850billion in annual waste in the current system (look up the recent Thompson Reuters study.) But every little bit helps.

I'm for tort reform as part of health care reform. I'm also not against a complex bill, even if it's long, that covers every detail and isn't riddled with loopholes.

The vile health insurance companies control many aspects of my life. I can't pursue my own business, because the self-employed who pay premiums are at risk of their claims being denied when we actually get sick. Therefore, I am forced to work for an employer that provides group health insurance that cannot deny my claims (in most cases, not all.) I can't be self-employed because the risk of a denied claim and paying the full cost of a major illness could force me to sell my house. When younger, I couldn't take a 6-month break between jobs and use my savings to travel the world, because, again, buying health insurance as an individual is too risky for the previously stated reasons. The current system has curtailed my freedom in many areas.

So get up and fight. The enemies of freedom are counting on your complacency.

Waste in the U.S. Healthcare System Pegged at $700 Billion in Report from Thomson Reuters

"The bad news is that an estimated $700 billion is wasted annually. Administrative Inefficiency (17% of healthcare waste): The large volume of redundant paperwork in the U.S healthcare system accounts for $100 billion to $150 billion in spending annually.

Healthcare Provider Errors (12% of healthcare waste): Medical mistakes account for $75 billion to $100 billion in unnecessary spending each year.

TEL AVIV � A column on a "right wing" website suggesting an Islamic motivation for last week's Fort Hood shooting massacre may help generate a backlash against American Muslim soldiers, according to CNN.

On CNN's American Morning show yesterday, reporter Carol Costello quoted the mother of a Muslim U.S. soldier as fearing "a backlash against Muslim American soldiers."

"She knows some are already reaching conclusions as to why Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire on his fellow soldiers," Costello stated.

Continued Costello: "The right-wing website, Pajamas Media, is an example. Phyllis Chesler writing, 'I knew in my bones that the shooter or shooters were Muslim. We must connect the dots before it's too late.'"

Costello was referring to a Pajamas Media column entitled "The Jihadist is always the victim," in which Chesler quoted from widespread reports of Hasan's ties to militant Islam.

Chesler, professor emerita of psychology and women's studies at the College of Staten Island, has been a noted feminist activist who co-founded the National Women's Health Network and the Association for Women in Psychology. Hasan, a Muslim psychiatrist who reportedly had been disciplined for pushing Islam on his patients at one point in his career, had given away his furniture and handed out Qurans before allegedly going to the military post and firing on soldiers at a processing center where soldiers prepared to deploy.

They are prescribing many more tests, treatments etc, than are necessary in order to make sure the information is in the charts. There are many costly things done - which do not benefit the patient, but rather protect the Hospital etc, in case of any lawsuit. It's just what they have to do, anymore.

This is why there are so many commercials for trial lawyers and for the sale of structured settlements.

The Dems are way too beholden to trial lawyers for contributions, so they don't include tort reform which is needed the most.

The house health care bill is just a total sham. Every congressman in Mass voted for the bill. Now the Senate has to clean up the mess out of the house. 2,000 pages - is just irresponsible,

2) Provisions to make sure that those in the U.S. illegally can't get public health care. Let's not forget that governments worldwide have trouble preventing illegal aliens from benefiting from social programs.
3) Discourage legal immigration from people that are only interested in moving to the U.S. in order to get free medical care. This is already a problem in Canada where "free" health care encourages people with little or no earning power to immigrate to the country--and then sponsor relatives to immigrate to Canada as well, knowing they will quickly be eligible for all benefits including health care. There has to be something like a residency provision that states you must have lived in the U.S. at least 10 years to get any kind of public health care. Naturally, the immigration/cheap labor lobby will try to stifle this part of the debate but they must be actively resisted.
Unless these issues are addressed, no health care reform of any kind has any hope of succeeding.

Health Care Bill Gives Obama Power to Appoint Government 'Commissioner' With Sweeping Power to Dictate Health Coverage

(AP Photo/Jeff Chiu)(CNSNews.com) � The health care bill under consideration in the House of Representatives would give President Obama the authority to name a new federal �Health Choices Commissioner� who would have sweeping power to govern the health insurance plans offered in a so-called "exchange" where millions of Americans would get their health insurance if the bill is enacted.

These powers would include deciding which treatments are covered, which companies can participate, which states can run their own exchange, and enrolling individuals into the public exchange.

Though the bill, House Resolution 3200, faces many political hurdles, it has passed three House committees and could be ready for a floor vote after Congress returns from recess. The overhaul package calls for establishing a health insurance exchange where people earning up to 400 percent of the poverty level will be able to purchase health insurance with the help of federal subsidies. This exchange would include a "public option" government-run health care plan as well as private plans that provide a minimum benefits package dictated by the government.

The Health Choices Commissioner would establish �the benefits to be made available under Exchange-participating health benefit plans during each plan year,� according to page 84 of the 1,018-page bill. That means the commissioner would determine what benefits the participating insurance companies must offer participating customers in the exchange.

The commissioner would also set rules for insurance companies to participate in the health insurance exchange, and establish criteria for individuals to receive federal subsidies to purchase insurance in the exchange, according to section 142 on page 42 of the legislation.

Further, the commissioner would have the authority to establish �automatic enrollment� of individuals who qualify for the health insurance exchange.

�The Commissioner shall provide a process under which individuals who are Exchange-eligible individuals described in subparagraph (B) are automatically enrolled under an appropriate Exchange participating health benefits plan,� the legislation says, beginning on page 97. �Such process may involve a random assignment or some other form of assignment that takes into account the health care providers used by the individual involved or such other relevant factors as the Commissioner may specify.�

The exchange eligible individuals [determined by subparagraph (B)] include someone who �has not opted out from receiving such affordability credit,� someone who �does not otherwise enroll in another exchange participating health benefits plan,� and someone �enrolled in an Exchange-participating plan that is terminated (during or at the end of the plan year) and who does not otherwise enroll in another Exchange participating health benefits plan.�

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) believes giving one bureaucrat this much power over the health insurance of Americans is among the least noticed provisions of the legislation.

�The American people want two things from health care reform: lower costs and more choices,� Boehner said in a statement. �Yet Democrats have done exactly the opposite coming up with a bill that actually raises costs--increasing the deficit by $240 billion--and letting a new federal bureaucrat make health care decisions that should be left to patients and their doctors.�

The legislation also gives the commissioner power to determine who can participate and under what conditions.

�The commissioner shall have the authority to establish such rules as may be necessary to deal with special situations with regard to uninsured individuals and employers participating as Exchange-eligible individuals and employers,� the bill says on page 82, �such as transitions periods for individuals and employers who gain or lose, Exchange-eligible participation status, and to establish grace periods for premium payment�

The exchange proposal in the legislation would work with state insurance departments to establish and enforce insurance reforms and consumer protections. It also establishes �affordability credits� that are made available to Americans earning up to 400 percent of poverty level ($88,000 per year for a family of four) to purchase insurance. The exchange is supposed to expand, according to a House Democratic summary of the legislation, to be open to more than just small employers.

The exchange will have at least three different tiers of exchange coverage, �Basic, Enhanced and Premium� according to the legislation. And the commissioner would be in charge of setting standards for defining each of these tiers.

The commissioner would also decide the �cost sharing� difference between each of these plans, according to pages 85-87 of the legislation. The variation in government subsidy between the cost for �Basic, Enhanced and Premium� plans could not exceed 10 percent, the bill says.

The national exchange would not replace state health care exchanges, such as the Commonwealth Connector in Massachusetts. Rather, such state plans could complement the national exchange. But that is only if these exchanges meet federal criteria set by the commissioner.

Otherwise, the commissioner could shut the state exchanges down.

�The Commissioner may terminate the approval (for some or all functions) of a State-based Health Insurance Exchange,� the legislation says on page 114.

Page 112 of the legislation says a state plan �must demonstrate the capacity to provide assurances satisfactory to the Commissioner that the State-based Health Insurance Exchange will carry out the function specified for the Health Insurance Exchange in the State (or States) involved.�

We need to support them with our dollars, demanding stores carry their products and spreading the word, and saying "thanks" for not selling out. Yes some of the prices for some things are higher but if we supported them they can make more and price can come down.. Its becoming increasingly difficult for me to NOT get upset with the things that are happening in politics (federal and local) and can't seem to find like-minded individuals to talk to or to try and make a difference with. I work in a Very small office consisting of highly educated liberals where all rational thought leaves as soon as any mention of politics come into play. I've only recently moved to Massachusetts and have essentially no friends here yet. This is partially of my own making due to the fact that once I know an individuals political stance and they happen to be in my opinion.... irrational, I find it hard to invest the effort required in a friendship.

When did we forget about liberty, freedom, and the pursuit of happiness? Where did common sense go? When did handing someone a fish to eat for a day become the preferred choice over teaching someone to fish? Since when do we need 3 cops to WATCH while someone else changes a light bulb on the side of the road? Why is it that if you work hard, you get punished for your efforts and criticized by people that want what you have but lack the motivation to get their themselves?

If you find yourself asking the same questions often, let me know I'm not alone! If you have an idea of what I can do to help reverse this downward spiral we are in, let me know.

We gladly march behind the street sweepers in a show of opposition to war or the glorification of war. We believe that the best way to honor veterans is to abolish all war and bring all veterans home, out of harms way.

At 49 percent for Republican Chris Christie versus 44 percent for Corzine, the election wasn't even close enough to be stolen by ACORN. (Although Corzine did extremely well among underaged Salvadoran prostitutes living in government housing.)

The biggest winner election night was pollster Scott Rasmussen, who -- once again -- produced the most accurate poll results. New York Times poll: Corzine 40, Christie 37; Quinnipiac poll: Corzine 43, Christie 38; Rasmussen poll: Christie 46, Corzine 43.

The biggest loser was President Obama, who campaigned tirelessly for Corzine, even giving up golf on several occasions and skipping a quarter-million-dollar "date night" with Michelle to stump for the Democrat.

Just two days before the election, Obama was at a rally in New Jersey assuring voters that Corzine was "one of the best partners I have in the White House. We work together. ... Jon Corzine helped get this done."

Except the problem is that voting for Obama a year ago was a fashion statement, much like it was once a fad to buy Beanie Babies, pet rocks and Cabbage Patch Kids. But instead of ending up with a ridiculous dust-collector at the bottom of your closet, the Obama fad leaves you with higher taxes, a reduced retirement fund, no job and a one-year wait for an MRI.

That is why Corzine's defeat sounded the death knell for national health care.

The good news: Next time Corzine is in a major car accident after speeding on the New Jersey Turnpike, he'll be able to see a doctor right away.

The media will try to rescue health care by talking about nothing but the 23rd district of New York, where the Democrat won Tuesday night. Congratulations, Democrats -- you won a congressional seat in New York! Next up: A Catholic elected pope!

Far from an upset, the Democrats' winning the 23rd district was a long-term plan of the Obama White House. That's why Obama made John McHugh, the moderate Republican congressman representing the 23rd district, his Secretary of the Army earlier this year. The Democrats thought McHugh's seat would be easy pickings.

Only in the last week has everyone acted as if a Democratic victory in the 23rd district would be a shocking surprise -- an upset victory caused by puritanical Republicans staging inquisitions against "mainstream" Republican candidates like Dede Scozzafava, the designated "Republican" candidate in the special election.

This is preposterous -- there was absolutely nothing Republican about Scozzafava. As a supporter of partial-birth abortion, card-check union schemes and massive government spending programs, she was less Republican than John McCain.

Even Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos called Scozzafava the most liberal candidate in the race -- which may explain why she was the choice of George Soros' Working Families Party and why she promptly endorsed the Democrat after withdrawing from the race last weekend.

Conservative opposition to Scozzafava hardly suggests that they plan to impose litmus tests on every Republican candidate in the 2010 elections.

Speaking of litmus tests, on MSNBC recently, liberal blogger Jane Hamsher said of the possibility that a blue dog Democrat would oppose national health care: "I dare Blanche Lincoln -- I dare Blanche Lincoln to join a filibuster. She'll draw primary opponents so fast it would make your head spin."

While I'm sure an out-of-touch liberal blogger from Hollywood knows more about Arkansas than an elected senator from that state, Hamsher's threat sounds more like an intra-party civil war than conservatives opposing a George Soros-supported Republican candidate in a New York congressional race.

Not only do conservatives not pick insane fights -- such as staging a 2006 primary fight against a recent vice presidential candidate because he supported the war in Iraq -- but conservatives are more popular than Republicans.

By contrast, liberals are less popular than Democrats. When conservatives take control of the Republican Party, Republicans win. When liberals take control of the Democratic Party, Democrats end up out of power for eight to 12 years.

OK, so you already did you share to help the economy by getting rid of every employee. You're a fine example of how America pulls together in a crisis. At least when the bill passes, you can't help unemployment go up further because you already let go of all your employees.

At least my company simply froze our wages for a year so that no one would be laid off. We employees were happy to give up something (raises) just so we wouldn't have to see any of our colleagues terminated. We are all working to cut operations costs elsewhere, and if we reach the goal, we are all getting bonuses.

My brother is an electrician, and is the foreman in charge of projects his company bids on. Whenever he runs a job efficiently and makes the costs come in under what was budgeted, he gets a percentage of the money he saved the company. Yet he still only hires IBEW (union) electricians to work on these jobs--there are other ways to cut costs than hiring illegals.

In both cases, companies and employees work together to save jobs while keeping the business from failing.

It is industry that has made this country strong, but when we outsource our jobs and send our products to be manufactured overseas, our future will become uncertain and our economy will suffer. When my calls to customer service are routed to call centers in India or the Philippines, I always ask to be transferred to a call center here in the United States. I ask politely, but persistently, because I believe in supporting American labor.

Most times they transfer me without question. Sometimes they say they can�t, but when I hang up and call back, I�ll get someone who can. Still other times, I�m not able to get back onshore, but I make it a point to only do business with companies that have not outsourced all of their call centers overseas. I don�t mind the language barrier, and in fact, I have found that many call center representatives offshore speak English quite clearly and are very helpful. To me, it is all about supporting American labor.

I am surrounded by people who have lost their jobs (or know of someone who has lost their job) due to so much outsourcing, and I believe that we must join together to send a message to corporate bosses and big businesses. If they want American customers, then they should provide American jobs.

I try to buy products made here in the U.S.A. When I shop I turn items over, and whenever possible, I buy those made here in the States. It is difficult finding items that are manufactured in our country, because most are made everywhere but here, especially in China. It is a struggle for me personally when faced with little choice but to buy products made in China, because not only do I feel like I�m supporting Communism, but also I feel like I�m inadvertently supporting China�s cultural genocide of the Tibetan people. Furthermore, I feel like my purchasing power is only making China stronger, while the economy here in the United States is struggling.

Please excuse the diminutive component to this list. I�m a saver, not a shopper, and these are the only items that I have found so far. Each item had �Made in the U.S.A.� on the back or bottom. I understand that claim does not always mean that the product was made here. It could have been made from foreign parts, but simply packaged here. Or, it could contain domestic materials, but was assembled in Mexico, etc. I intend to write to companies individually in order to inquire about the manufacturing of their products. Here's a fine example of how the cons try to deceive you.

I count eight cities in the above list that tend to choose Republican mayors. Three cities tend to alternate equally between the parties. The other 39 usually go Democrat. I missed about 20 cities--go look them up and you'll find they usually go Democrat, too. Except for Fresno, OMG, I forgot Fresno.

Andy Stern: Comrade Obama�s #1 Visitor

Stop the ACLU reports that two recent court rulings have resulted in the Moonbat Messiah "voluntarily" disclosing his White House visitor�s list. General Stanley McCrystal -- commander of our forsaken troops in Afghanistan -- has met with ObaMao twice. In stark contrast, Andy Stern -- head of the ACORN-affiliated Service Employees International Union (SEIU) -- has visited the White House 22 times, leading the list.

SEIU has earned its face time with the POTUS by donating $60 million and 100,000 volunteers to Obama�s campaign. Although Stern has made it clear that every single member of SEIU is to devote time to helping elect Democrats, the union is designated a 527, meaning that it is supposedly apolitical and therefore is not limited in the soft money it can shovel at sleazy politicians, unlike honest institutions.

Given Stern�s radical background, it�s unsurprising that his tactics are thuggish:

Under Stern�s leadership, SEIU commonly bullies and pressures companies into signing agreements to make SEIU the representative of their employees. If a company resists joining the union, Stern and his political, media and activist allies conspire to launch "corporate campaigns" aimed at breaking down that resistance through what they term the "death of a thousand cuts." In such campaigns, the cabal of attackers harasses and disrupts company activities, sends vicious emails and letters to stockholders, intimidates customers, stalks and frightens employees, files baseless lawsuits, and plants false stories with media allies to smear the company�s reputation.

These pressure tactics are often successful in bringing companies into SEIU�s fold. When this occurs, all of their employees are required to join the union. SEIU prefers this arrangement (which Stern calls "Union Democracy") because, in times past, a large percentage of workers who were given a choice voted against joining the union.

This is also why Chairman Zero & friends favor Card Check.

SEIU stands to make out big from healthcare nationalization, so when patriots spoke out against it at town hall meetings, even high-level SEIU thugs turned out to rough them up.

Another favored White House visitor is the radical financier George Soros, who only has to snap his fingers for a sit-down with the Manchurian Teleprompter. Investor.com reports:

Like the sociable Stern, administration records show Soros� appointments were officially scheduled within hours of his actual visit. It looks like fast service.

Soros not only has made statements critical of free-market capitalism, he�s also a philanthropist whose hobbyhorse MoveOn.org tried to smear Iraq war commander Gen. David Petraeus as "Gen. Betray-us" in a full-page ad in the New York Times.

Both Soros and Stern are prominent partisans in the Shadow Party, a network of ultra-left activist groups working feverishly toward the destruction of liberty in favor of collectivist statism. They have a comrade at the top.

You make a fine argument about the history of recessions, and the patterns they follow.

If your estimate is true, does that mean we have to listen to another year of Republicans blaming Obama for the high unemployment rate? Hate to break it to you, but Repubs are so blinded by their hatred of Obama that they WILL continue to blame it on him, in spite of the fact that the recession began a year before Obama took office.

1.) They want government to create jobs for them, but they don't really want a nanny government, do they? "Obama, where's that job you promised me?" Newsflash: Obama is not your momma. OBAMA'S FIRST SPEECH TO A JOINT SESSION OF CONGRESS

If you read the speech, all of it, you will see the Obama did not promise you instant results. He discussed LONG TERM planning. He is setting up programs to create prosperity over the next decades, not the next month (which would be a short-term quick fix.) He did not promise to have a job for you tomorrow.

In the speech, Obama said,

"And tonight, I am grateful that this Congress delivered, and pleased to say that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is now law. Over the next two years, this plan will save or create 3.5 million jobs. More than 90% of these jobs will be in the private sector � jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges; constructing wind turbines and solar panels; laying broadband and expanding mass transit. Because of this plan, there are teachers who can now keep their jobs and educate our kids. Health care professionals can continue caring for our sick. There are 57 police officers who are still on the streets of Minneapolis tonight because this plan prevented the layoffs their department was about to make."

Note that he said "save or create" millions of jobs. "Save" means he was trying to prevent job losses. If he didn't act quickly, no doubt even more jobs would have been lost.

It's likely the unemployment rate would be closer to 12% today were it not for the stimulus programs. Note that Obama said "Over the next two years..." The stimulus program is a two-year project, and we're only 8 months into it. This major recession was almost a full-blown depression, and we're lucky unemployment isn't at 20% or more. When the stimulus program expires in February/March 2011, then you can say whether it was a success or not. Don't judge it too soon. (Unless you're one of the unpatriotic ones whose goal is to tear down the government.)

Obama also said:

"None of this will come without cost, nor will it be easy. But this is America. We don�t do what�s easy. We do what is necessary to move this country forward. For that same reason, we must also address the crushing cost of health care.
This is a cost that now causes a bankruptcy in America every thirty seconds. By the end of the year, it could cause 1.5 million Americans to lose their homes. In the last eight years, premiums have grown four times faster than wages. And in each of these years, one million more Americans have lost their health insurance. It is one of the major reasons why small businesses close their doors and corporations ship jobs overseas. And it�s one of the largest and fastest-growing parts of our budget.

Republicans don't want you to think about the fact that one-third of health care costs are administrative. They don't want you to think about the inefficiency of the current system. They don't want you to realize that the health industry industry has FAILED miserably, and is harming the economy. The don't see that the health business is as corrupt and harmful to America as Wall Street and the bankers were as they destroyed the economy last year. Just think, if small businesses could afford to offer partially-paid health plans to their employees, they might be less likely to hire illegals who don't expect to receive job benefits.

Republicans would be a great counterforce to keep the current administration on its toes. Obama is not perfect, and the opposing point of view should be heard. But instead of providing constructive criticism, they attack the president, with unpatriotic Joe Wilson rudely yelling at Obama during a speech. The patriotic Republicans use their intelligence, not name-calling, the persuade the president to consider their alternative plans (if they have any.) Where is the Republican leadership these days? And I mean real leaders, not the immature Joe Wilson types.

This was a long opinion piece because I don't believe the answers to complex issues can be found in a slogan or sound bite. I fully expect the responses to this and the other thoughtful posts this afternoon to be another barrage of rightwing insults, slogans, graphs, or sound bites.

I Know How Obama Can Create Jobs! (Nationalize everything! (just kidding))

Obama is trying all kinds of experiments to create jobs. Stimulus package. Cash for Clunkers so that people will buy new cars, and auto workers will have to build these cars. Other programs.

So far, not enough jobs.

ANSWER: Nationalize every business. And then force all businesses to hire more workers.

OK, got your attention now? Of course no one wants to nationalize businesses. My point is that the President can't create jobs out of thin air. He can't tell businesses what to do. He shouldn't dictate what businesses do.

Thus, I would like to be king for a day, and tell businesses what they should do. I'll tell some Americans what to do, too.

AMERICAN BUSINESS PEOPLE HAVE TO HELP.
* Stop your hiring freeze--can't you see that the recession is almost over?
* Hire back the Americans you laid off, first.
* Stop hiring undocumented aliens.

AMERICAN DRUG USERS HAVE TO HELP.
* Stop using controlled substances. Get help.
* Stop selling drugs or robbing people to feed your drug habit. Your jail time costs taxpayers billions every year.
* Stop using, and return to the workforce. Your meth, cocaine, or pot habit is no excuse to stay on unemployment forever.
* Stop using illegal drugs from Latin America. Including imported pot. You are supporting drug cartel crime in Latin America. You are making conditions so bad there that people want to flee to the USA. You are also supporting the increased drug cartel crime, like murders and kidnappings, which has spread to the southwestern USA.
* STOP IT, now.

OK, my argument is that the president cannot "dictate" what businesses or people do. After all, he is not a "dictator." He can only ASK kids to stay in school, and ASK Americans to help their fellow Americans whenever there's a crisis. He and congress can initiate progrmas to help businesses get back on their feet, but now that the economy is improving, we need those businesses to take some initiative and not just rake in the profits thanks to the improved economy.

I've made some suggestions of what businesses and people can do to help at this time. I'm sure you all have your own ideas, such as "close the borders." Statistics show that there are less undocumented immigrants in the country now than there were from 2000-2008, but that doesn't help if businesses are still hiring the ones who are here.

The patterns of past recessions are documented and well known. A year ago, economic experts were predicting that employment rates would not improve until the after the recession ends. Let's look at what they were saying about the economy a year ago. Below is the full text of an article in Forbes magazine. Here are some interesting points he makes:

"Here, nonetheless, is what the history books have to say: This is the 11th recession since World War II, and at 12 months, already among the worst. The previous 10 recessions lasted an average of 10 months. Only recessions in 1973-75 and 1981-82 were longer, each lasting for 16 months."

He was right, this is one of the worse. Most experts now agree that today's recession began in December 2007 (you can google for this info.) That means we're 24 months into a recession, beating the previous longest recessions of 16 months. Obama came in after the recession was already a year old.

"Typically, the stock market bottoms out a little after halfway through a recession and then starts its climb back up. If the indicator holds, and the market's lowest day proves to be Nov. 20, when the Dow closed at 7,550 and the S&P 500 at 750, then the recession would end sometime next year."

"Unemployment, on the other hand, is a lagging indicator. The economy tends to be well on the road to recovery before unemployment starts to fall. In 1990-91, it was 15 months after the bottom of the recession that unemployment peaked. After the bursting of the dot-com bubble in 2001, unemployment peaked 19 months later. That means the unemployment rate of 6.5% is likely to get worse for some months before it gets better."

He was right. The unemployment rate did get worse, and, if it follows the past trends that the author described, it's going to be awhile before employment rates start to rise again. One factor is the "bottom of the recession"--google that phrase and you'll see that economists are not sure that we've hit the bottom yet, but think the bottom might have been in August or September. It'll take a few more months of recovery before they can be sure it's over, and calculate the "bottom."

Let say the bottom really was in August 2009. For those other recent recessions, it took 15 to 19 months following the "bottom" for the unemployment to reach its worst level. If it takes 15 months in this recession, and you count Aug. 2009 as the bottom of the recession, then unemployment rates might continue to rise until October 2010. We may not have seen the worst of it yet.

Instead of blaming Obama for the unemployment rate, try to look at the bigger picture. Obama arrived in the middle of a recession. Before he took office, those who watch business cycles predicted that unemployment rates would get worse before they get better. If this recession follows the pattern of past recessions, unemployment rates may continue to rise for another year (Aug. 2009 plus 15 months.) The government has a difficult task ahead of it, to fight the normal effects of the recession.

Economists give birth to a one-year-old downturn. So when do things get better?

Good news. The keeper of the business cycle books, the National Bureau of Economic Research, announced Monday what economists have been saying for a long time--this is a recession. And, NBER says, it's been a recession since December of 2007.

The announcement comes as no surprise to anyone with a TV, newspaper or more than 10 friends. Why is it good news? We've already gotten through one year, and now the question is not "are we in a recession?" but the slightly more optimistic "are we in a recovery?"

Recession announcements are like babies in that there's growing evidence of what's coming months before they officially arrive. The U.S. gross domestic product first declined in the fourth quarter of 2008. Payroll employment has declined every month in 2008. Housing prices have been falling for two or three years in many regions of the country. The fifth largest investment bank, Bear Stearns, collapsed in March. The fourth largest, Lehman Brothers (nyse: LEHMQ - news - people ), filed for bankruptcy in September. A few weeks later, the stock market crashed. Consumer confidence plummeted.

The policy of the Business Cycle Dating Committee (seven of the nation's leading macro-economists who make the determination for the NBER) is to wait until it can assign a month in which the recession began--"the committee waits long enough so that the existence of a recession is not at all in doubt," according to the NBER.

However, a popular yardstick for recession--two successive quarters of GDP decline, has not yet been reached. The economy dipped (-.2% GDP) in the fourth quarter of 2007. But in the first quarter of 2008 it grew .9%, and in the second quarter, it grew 2.8%.

That robust second-quarter growth was boosted by the $152 billion economic stimulus act--at the time, a sum that seemed like overkill--and gave back an extra $600 to most taxpayers.

Figures for the fourth quarter of 2008 are likely to be poor. The outlook for the holiday shopping season is bleak. The Conference Board says U.S. households are expected to spend an average of $418 during the holiday season, off 12% from the $471 last year. A separate measure from Gallup says that Americans will spend $616, off 29% from the $866 last year. Whether the drop in spending is 12% or 29%, in a heavily consumption-dependent economy, the fall is likely to push the fourth quarter into negative territory.

News for the history books, but not for policy makers. "I've known we were in an economy that's slowed down significantly. The American people know that," said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, when asked about the announcement on Monday. "I don't think this is going to be big news." President-elect Barack Obama held three press conferences last week alone to discuss the economy, making clear that it was a priority regardless of terminology.

It is protest day, for the Left and the Right, on Capitol Hill.

First out of the gate - 9 Protesters backing a universal health care system briefly occupied Sen. Joe Lieberman's office this morning.

Protesters were arrested, one by one, and dragged out of his office amid chants of "Everyone in and noone out, universal healthcare now!" and "Represent Connecticut, not AETNA!"

The whole affair, from occupation to final arrest, lasted 40 minutes.

Lieberman, the Connecticut Independent, has said he will join Republicans to filibuster a Democractic health bill if it contains a public health insurance option to operate alongside the private insurance market.

According to the U.S. Capitol Police, officers arrested nine protesters in Sen. Joe Lieberman�s office just after 10 a.m. today inside the Hart Senate Office Building.

�The demonstrators insisted on disrupting office operations after they rejected repeated offers for meetings with both the senator�s chief of staff and legislative director to discuss their concerns,� Marshall Wittmann, a Lieberman spokesman, said in a statement.

�After rejecting these meeting offers, refusing to heed warnings from the Capitol Hill police and continuing the disruption, some of the demonstrators were removed by the police.�

In a statement, Capitol Police said the nine were arrested without incident and there have been no other arrests today.

Roll Call, the Capitol Hill newspaper, reports that the protesters were members of Code Pink, a liberal group, and that the protest was over health care. Lieberman, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, has said he opposes a public option in the health care bill and would join Republicans in a filibuster to prevent the bill from going to a floor vote.

Code Pink was not available for an immediate comment.

Updated at 3:44 p.m. ET: Capitol Hill Police arrested 10 more demonstrators outside House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's congressional office in the Cannon House Office Building, according to Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

Demonstrators for and against the health care legislation faced off in the hallway, ABC reports, and left the hallway littered with shredded pages from the bill.

Updated at 4:32 p.m. ET: According to Lacy MacAuley, national media coordinator for Mobilization for Health Care for All, her organization sponsored this morning�s protest at Sen. Lieberman�s office. The group's website says that Kai Newkirk, the group's national coordinator, was among those arrested.

MacAuley says the organization was protesting the fact that Lieberman is willing to block a public option, but accepts money from insurance lobbyists.

(AP)Democrats in the House can only afford to lose 40 members of their caucus when they vote on health care legislation this weekend, and leaders are scrambling to assuage the concerns of certain groups, particularly the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Democrats concerned over abortion issues.

There are already about 25 Democrats who almost certainly will vote against the Democrats' health care package, according to the Washington Post.

On Thursday, the Hispanic caucus told President Obama he could lose 20 more votes if revisions pertaining to immigration are made to the House bill, according to various reports. Mr. Obama met at the White House Thursday with a handful of CHC members, including Caucus Chairwoman Nydia Vel�zquez (D-N.Y.), Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), Charlie Gonzalez (D-Texas) and Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.).

The lawmakers said they opposed a provision from the Senate health care bill that would prohibit illegal immigrants from buying private insurance plans on the new health insurance exchanges to be created, even with their own money. If the provision is added to the House bill, "I guess they won't have those 20 votes" hinging on the issue, Velazquez said, the Post reports.

The House bill already would already require immigrants to verify their citizenship in order to receive federal subsidies for insurance. However, the House could be compelled to adopt the stronger Senate language. The White House is backing the Senate language because it is concerned the issue could derail the bill once Senate and House leaders have to merge their proposals, the Boston Globe reports

Democrats are also trying to bring on board members concerned the bill does not do enough to make sure no federal funds would support abortions. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops participated in negotiations over the issue, according to the Associated Press.

Debate on the bill will start on Saturday and could take at least five hours, the Post reports, and legislators may not actually vote until Sunday.
